About Joss Whedon, a geniusly geeky geek. Sorry. Geek geek geeeeek!! Erm...
Joss Whedon! Creator of much brilliant entertainment. I discovered him with Buffy The Vampire Slayer, the TV Series, and became a fan for life. Why? Because of the layers. That show had layers, which showed immense intelligence and imagination. His work has an emotional side, which I connect to as well, but above all, everything is showered with a deep sense of humor, peeking through every crack and every layer. This book is a biography on him, from the beginning and up till 2013, about the time of the Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV Show Pilot premiere.
The book is well written and engaging, author Amy Pascale is clearly passionate about the subject, and brings out many interesting details on Joss that were new to me, such as his uncredited work on on one of my favorite action movies, Speed. A memorable section is the cancellation of Firefly, which is just heartbreaking and the following, victorious creation of Serenity.
Amy starts out slow, with chapters on his parents and upbrining and picks up speed as his career takes flight. I found the whole thing very interesting, however, it feels as if everything is seen a bit from the outside and I would have welcomed a more direct involvement of the man himself, however impossible that might have been.
In the end, I am happy with this book and will recommend it to anyone who wants to know just a bit more about Joss Whedon, his work and his life so far. What is also good about the book, is that it sums up some of the things I have missed over the years, like Veronica Mars, My So Called Life, Dr. Horrible's Sing-a-long, Much ado about nothing and other things, which I now have on my list of stuff to check out a.s.a.p.
Clearly, it is written by a fan, for a fan (like me). So, thank you Amy for this excellent work and thank you Joss for creating new worlds to enjoy.
